Time for Parents to Rocket Launch

Whenever we’ve been doing the same thing for too long, we start to drift. It may be that our focus takes a hit or perhaps a foot falls asleep or we start to fidget. How long that takes is unique for each of us, depending on lots of variables, but when we’ve past that threshold… we know. At that junction, we need what’s called a state change. A state change is simply a fancy word for switching it up. If you’ve been reading a long time, stand up and walk around. If listening, try talking. Do something…anything…different.

Adding elements that are novel, unpredictable or complex encourage our brains to wake up and pay attention. That’s why novelty, unpredictability and complexity are considered flow boosters. Honor the challenge/skill balance first and foremost and if you can press on boosters without tilting the balance towards anxiety, flow might be more accessible.

Novelty wakes us up with brain chemistry, while unpredictability sparks interest through surprise. Complexity alerts our brain that there is more to understand.

You might:

Change location—Get out of the house. Get into nature, if possible.

Add some music.

Exercise or use your body in some way.

Read or listen to something or someone interesting that’s related to your goal.

Go deeper into your task with a wide lens or a very narrow one.

Start to become aware of when your mind and body need a state change and creatively honor that need. Happy Boldschooling!
